General Information


(i) Career

Graduates with a Bachelor of Communication degree could find career with the private and public sectors in :

  • Administration
  • Journalism
  • Public Relations
  • Film Production
  • Event Management
  • Advertising
  • and other related profession within the discipline

(ii)Alumni USM

The USM Alumni Society was set up in June 1989. It was initiated by a group of ex-students through the setting up of Protem Committee, led by Prof. Madya Itam Sulaiman (Bio ‘74) and other academic and administration staff. Among others, the objectives of the Alumni are to enhance the social, culture and scientific interaction among members, to provide a channel between USM and its graduates, to actively participate in intellectual and physical development of USM including the economic, social and political development of Malaysia.

The Alumni membership is categorized into three categories that is ordinary member, associate member and honourary member. Ordinary members are those who have received their degree from USM.

Associate members are those who have received their diplomas or certificates from USM and full-time staff of USM. Meanwhile, honourary members are individuals that have contributed significantly to the Alumni and USM.

The USM Alumni Society is being administered by an Executive Committee, comprises of President, Vice-President, Secretary, Assistant Secretary, Treasurer and five ordinary members that are elected during the annual general meeting. The Executive Committee will hold the office for two years.

The Vice Chancellor is the advisor of the society.

 

(iii) Awards and Deans Lists.

Excellent students are given these awards :

(i) The best student awards according to academic year.

(ii) The best student awards in various fields:

  • Advertising
  • Persuasive Communication
  • Journalism
  • Film and Television

(iii) Dean’s List Awards to students with GPA 3.5 and above.

 

(iv) The School’s Society

Persatuan Komunikasi (PERKOM) USM was established as an avenue for communication students to organise and participate in various activities. All communication student are members of the society. PERKOM also acts as a liason body between the management of the school and students.

Among the activities organised by the PERKOM are hosting of communication night, academic tours, networking with other higher learning institutions, locally and abroad and workshops/seminars in collaboration with the school.

 

(v) Lecturer-Student Committee

This committee was established to strengthen the relationship between the lecturers and students. The Committee serves as a mechanism in getting feedbacks/comments from the students. The Committee comprises of the Deputy Dean (Academic and Students Development), representative from the lectures and PERKOM’s Committee members, including student representative.

 

(vi) Higher Studies/Degree

The School of Communication offers post-graduate programs in :

• Master of Communication (Screen Studies) - Course Work

• Master of Communication (Science and Environmental Journalism) - Mixed Mode

• Master of Arts (Communication) - Mixed Mode

• Master of Communication Research Mode

• Doctor of Philosophy Research Mode

 

(vii) Study Abroad Scheme

Universiti Sains Malaysia offers a Study Abroad Scheme to first and second year students who are interested in spending a semester at various institutions abroad. This scheme will expose students to international experiences, while allowing them to transfer credit of courses taken in institutions abroad.
